In LOM, workers may install a room full of servers and then lock them in that room in the dark. Having servers in this environment saves on energy and can also save on cooling costs. Although some hardware pieces like computers may need a management card, many servers provide built-in remote management that makes LOM easier.

System administrators, for example, may plug a rollover cable into a dedicated LOM port in the server to connect it to the remote management system.

I was talking to a Dell rep today and he said this was the case, but reading the description on the website, it indicates the Express shares the bandwidth of the LOM. See below. You'll have to check the Summary page in the main iDRAC Settings menu to view it, and you'll likely have to reboot the server for that field to be updated. When I inquired to dell about the 'idrac express' they noted it cannot be used if the OS is locked up.

What has changed is the physical hardware port is installed on every high end 12th generation server. Now on the 12th generation servers you will need a license key to enable the features for the Enterprise level IDRAC 7. Once the key has been used to unlock the Enterprise level functionality what are some of the enhancements over the old iDRAC6 Enterprise.
